Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Chicago Blackhawks
by BookieKiller.com's NHL Guru, Rink Rat
The Columbus Blue Jackets did something special the other night. They were being pounded 4-1 by the Vancouver Canucks then came back to tie the game 4-4. They'd never done that before. They followed that up by grinding out a 1-0 win over San Jose and before those two games the Jackets tied Colorado and beat Nashville. Useful results all.
Of course on the road they are mutts, but at home they can be irritating. They are 15-9-3-1 on home ice. Columbus is fifth in the Western Conference in home scoring (79 goals, 2.93 gaa) and a not too shabby 66 goals against (2.44, 4th). They have a solid power play at home (30/146, 20.5%, 2nd) matched up with good penalty killing (17/129, 86.8%, 4th). Columbus is an unremarkable 46-48 playing even strength, which means they pretty much play their opponents even and win with their power play. Their odd- man differential is a healthy +15 on home ice. Over the past ten games their record is 4-4-2-0, which isn't bad all considered. Their defense will be bolstered by the return of Scott Lachance and Rotislav Klesla, two hard working components. Goaltender Marc Denis is a terror on home ice, where the team's overall save percentage is .926.
Columbus is a fragile team. When the game turns on them they will lie down. Against Vancouver they had quit in the second period but when the Canucks decided to play the fool the Jackets, to their credit, re-inflated and played hard in the third period. That come back had to lift their morale.
The Chicago Blackhawks are another of those skitzy teams, good at home, bad on the road. The 'hawks are adding to their woes by playing poorly in their last ten games - 2-6-2-0. Alexei Zhamnov, Theo Fleury, and Steve Sullivan are not scoring. On the road their record is 9-14-6-2. The club is 58-58 even strength goals for and against on the road. However, overall, they are 70-82, which works out to 2.26 goals for per game (14th) and 2.65 against which is a more tolerable 7th. Their power play is anemic, 11/113, 9.7% which is second worst in the conference. Penalty killing is good - 21/147, 85.7%, 4th. Trouble is they take too many penalties and they are left with an odd-man deficit of -12. Not good. Jocelyn Thibault is having a fine season and his .913 save percentage means that he is hard to beat.
Chicago will be playing their third game in four nights, and back-to-back when they meet Columbus. Their final game record of three-in-four games is 4-5-0-1, but over the season their second game of back-to-back games is 2-4-1-3. This game will likely turn on Chicago's odd-man play.
Columbus can score with the man-advantage and the 'hawks can't. Chicago is a strong penalty killing team on the road, but they have to do too much of it. Columbus goaltender Marc Denis can outplay a good Thibault on home ice and the extra man means extra goals. Columbus wins it.
Play on Columbus on the Money Line !!!
